Port in a Storm

Many folks are nervous in an electrical storm--my own mother, understandably so, as lightning once struck the chimney over her bedroom in the family home near Croton when she was a child. So years later, whenever the thunder rolled, she would gather her 5 children on her bed like a mother hen and we all felt safe.

Childhood fears may linger, but when Environment Canada flashes a tornado warning, as happened here a few weeks ago, we grab the dog and head out to seek comfortable shelter in the basement of the little church. There in cool comfort and underground safety we have a port in the storm.
